Good things to know
before you sign.
How banks structure interest rates, processing charges, and why flat rates can be deceptive.
How do Reducing Balance and Flat Rate loans differ?+
In a reducing balance loan, interest is calculated each month only on the remaining unpaid principal. As you repay, your interest portion drops. In a flat rate loan, interest is charged on the initial principal for the entire tenure, even when you have repaid most of the loan. A 6% flat rate car loan often equals an effective 11% to 12% reducing rate!
Why can a lower quoted interest rate end up costing more?+
A lender advertising an 8.5% rate with a 1.5% processing fee and mandatory insurance can easily cost thousands more than a lender offering 8.75% with zero fees. Our calculator combines total interest, processing fees, documentation charges, and discounts into a single Total Borrowing Cost so you see the whole picture.
Can I compare loans with different tenures or amounts?+
Comparing loans with different tenures on total interest is misleading because longer tenures naturally incur higher cumulative interest while offering lower EMIs. To evaluate which lender offers the truly cheaper financial product, compare equivalent amounts and tenures.
Are processing fees negotiable with Indian banks?+
Yes. During festive seasons or for borrowers with high credit scores (750+ CIBIL), many public and private sector banks in India offer 50% to 100% processing fee waivers. Always ask the loan officer if they can match or waive administrative and processing charges.
